Today I want to share a Guiness Breaking Record!
Our little community of Clarington helped break the Guiness Record for the most batteries collected in a 24 hour period!
Residents of our community, and the rest of Durham Region, were notified a couple of months ago that our recycling trucks would now be collecting dead batteries twice a year. What great news! It's so hard to know what to do with those old batteries. We were so used to simply throwing them away in the garbage until we learned the damage and danger it was causing in the landfills. Our family had been collecting them and bringing them to local places that accepted them but it was sometimes hard to find places that would do that. But now, we have the convenience of knowing they'll be picked up twice a year at the curb. And it's nice to know that those people who may not have heard about not throwing batteries in the garbage have an alternative too. It's great!!
The old record for battery collection was just over 440 lbs. The Region of Durham collected an incredible 11,288 pounds (almost 5,120 kilograms) of batteries!!!! Now that's how to break a record!
On the video you can hear that Durham Region is the first large municipality in Canada to collect batteries.
